Why Invest In Art

1
Tangible Asset
One of the main advantages of art as an investment is that it is asset backed in that you will always have a physical asset with a defined value. Unlike other investments such as stocks and shares it is a tangible asset which you hold. Often we find that in time of uncertainty other more liquid assets tend to fall quicker and recover slower. This was particularly evident in the financial crash of 2008-2009 and during the Covid 19 pandemic.
2
Pleasure
Unlike other types of investment, art is capable of giving pleasure and an aesthetic enrichment as well as providing the potential for a return if you do decide to sell some of your collection.
3
Diversification
Many wealth managers see the benefits of having a mixed investment portfolio and agree on the value of art as an investment. Deloitte's Art & Finance Report 2019 found " 86 percent of wealth managers said art should be part of a wealth management offering."

Since the art market is not correlated to the performance of major stock markets it can be a useful way to diversify your investment portfolio. The art market has been known to grow even during times of economic uncertainty, making it an ideal choice for investment in the good times and the bad.
4
Financial Return
Art has the potential to deliver a very good financial return, it must also be said as with any investment if not done correctly it can result in a loss. Between 2000 and 2018 Artnet's Index for the Top 100 Artists produced an 8% present Compound Annual Growth Rate between 2000 and 2018, compared with 3% for the S&P500. In The Contemporary Art market Report in 2019 by artmarket.com they found that "Driven by growing demand, the total volume of auction turnover generated by the Contemporary Art auction segment worldwide has doubled over the past decade with the recent figures showing strong sales right across the segments price spectrum. In terms of turnover, the Art Market in 2019 posted a -14% contraction, but did not falter. The unsold rate remained perfectly stable at 38%, as did the overall price index, which rose +0.48%."
